It is one of the many waterfalls in the area, each with its own unique feature. Svartifoss means "the black falls", due to the color of its basalt columns. The rocks seems to fall along with the water, really impressive. This structure inspired the Reykjavik cathedral.
The path to the falls is quite simple. At the starting point you'll find a map with many paths in the area so that you can reach some scenic views on the Skaftafellsjokull glacier. The Skaftafellsjokull glacier can be seen from the path, but our sight is suddenly caught by the waterfall . The basalt columns are really impressive, shapes are regular and edges are sharp as columns collapse before the water polish them.
It is possibile to come back from a different path looking at the Skaftafellsjokull glacier and at the black sand left by glacial rivers .
