The Hokitika Gorges are some veri nice gorges, digged by the Hokitika river next to the Hokitika city.
The entrance is free, one our driving from the city. Keep in mind that the last part of the road is not paved, car rental company usually does not provide insurance in these conditions.
Short description: leave the car next to the entrance , there is not a proper parking area. At the beginning is already possible to spot the last section of the gorges . After a short stretch inside the forest the path leads in front of the most beautiful part of the gorges , the water has an incredible intense blue color. Usually, water of rivers flowing among trees reflect the green color of the leaves. Here the water is still blue even among the trees, this means blue is the actual color of the water. It seems this color is due to small elements floating in the water, elements coming both from the melting glaciers and the carved stones.
Don't forget to bring with you insect repellent!
