Route description
First leg: from Abbadia Lariana to Lierna.
The "Sentiero del viandante" starts from Abbadia Lariana, a small village reachable by car or train from Milan (probably, a stopover in Lecco will be required). We strongly suggest to use the train, it’s a better choice for the environment and to avoid traffic jam on the SS36 road.
Get off the train at Abbadia Lariana station and turn left on the SP72 road. You’ll have to walk a few hundred meters on this quite high-traffic road, with no side-walk, in order to reach the stairway on the left before the tunnel. This section was not comfortable to walk through, but the rest of the path deserve this effort.
We are on a wonderful autumn day and the landscapes are simply superb! I’ll not describe all the details on the path, but I’ll just try to show the general atmosphere on such a nice day.
On your left, the lake, a constant scenic presence with some small villages on its shores.
On your right, the Lecco alps (Resegone mountains), rising to the sky. Is time for foliage, the sun makes colours even more brilliant: yellow leaves, red leaves, even a purple leaf next to this stream! Red leaves on a white wall and the sky as background allow us to take a unique picture.
You’ll cross a few nice ancient villages like Maggiana, with the Barbarossa Stone Tower.
On the path there are restaurants and farms, you can book for lunch or bring you packet meal as we did. If you are looking for a restaurant, take note of:

Last but not least, a few "technical" info about the path: we walked about 11km, difference in height 300 meters. Signs and arrows constantly indicate the right direction. Just one note to get at the Lierna train station: of course, the station is outside the path, so be careful and remember to turn left here or you will keep walking in to Varenna! Just download and follow our GPX to avoid problems.
