"I had heard about the stupendous iridescence of the aurora upon the Ionian Sea, when you contemplate it from Etna's summit...The earthly and marine vastness revealed to our sight stretched as far as Africa, clearly visible, and Greece, as far as you could have guessed. It was one of the supreme moments of my life. Nothing was missing, not the golden fringe of a cloud, nor the eagles..."

Monte Fontane - Description

The Mount Fontane trail starts from PietraCannone houses.

A few meters after beyond the refuge, you'll find a narrow stone street, with a few mountain bike signs. At the end of this street there's a widening: you can go on the right , on a path digged on the cold magma, or you can go straight on into the wood and then rising among the trees.

Both the path lead you on top of the mount Fontane and are tracked on the map; the ascent through the wood is a bit more demanding but is also more beautiful to walk into. The ascent through the righe path is easier, but the path is so wide the even off-roads can drive on it, (probably not legally...) in order to bring lazy tourist on top of the trail. Moreover, someone use this small street so that they can leave garbage inside the park. You'll also find a ruined house almost covered by magma; if you walk beyond it, you'll enter inside the Bove Valley. We keep walking on the left of the house, passing close to a strange trunk and in a few hundreds meters we reach the top of the trail, to look at a wonderful Mount Etna and Bove Valley picture. We suggest you to rise through the wood and to use the lava digged path only if you want to go inside the Bove Valley.
