The cave named "Grotta dei Ladroni" is one of the many caves originated by the lava flow that you can find on mount etna slopes. The entrance is on the street that from Fornazzo leads to the Citelli refuge, just before you get to the refuge and it is indicated by a sign placed on the guard rail . It is possible to park the car in the open space in front of the road sign. The cave is a few metres' distance from the street. In the past, the cave was used as a "niviera": inside the cave, during the winter, the snow was gathered in order to preserve it and sell it during the summer. The use of the cave as a "niviera" is also testified by the several steps, cut into the lavic rocks, that allow you to visit it . Some parts of the ceiling have collapsed during the years. From one of these openings rises a birch tree , which roots sink into the lavic rocks. It is possible to walk through the cave for a few metres, until the exit point , that brings you back into the woods. Some sections of the cave allow you to stand on your feet, while in others you have to crawl. It is advisable to wear a protective helmet and be careful since the ceiling of the cave has several sharp parts.
